Garage Door Opener Not Working? 7 Checks Before You Call
Before booking a repair, try these quick, safe checks. They solve a surprising number of opener problems.
- Power. Is the opener plugged in? Check the GFCI outlet and breaker.
- Remote battery. Swap the battery in your remote or car button.
- Lock/vacation button. Many wall panels have a lock button that disables remotes. Check if it's on.
- Safety sensors. The small eyes near the floor must face each other with a steady light. Clean them and remove anything in the way.
- Manual release. If the red cord was pulled, the trolley is disconnected. Re-engaging it is usually covered in the opener manual.
- Track obstructions. Look for anything blocking the rollers.
- Golf cart cords. A common Villages issue is a charger cord crossing the sensor line.
When to stop and call
If the motor hums but the door doesn't move, the door looks crooked, or a spring or cable is broken, stop using it and request a technician.
